SAFETY PLAN GUIDE:

E-mail programs like Outlook Express, Netscape Mail and Eudora can be accessed by an abuser to read your incoming and outgoing email.

Instead, you can use a Web-based e-mail like Yahoo Mail and Hotmail for free.  You will be able to access your e-mail from any computer that has Internet access, without storing any information on that computer.

The Document and Web Browser History is a history of all the websites (including a copy of all the images) and all the documents you have viewed.  To erase the history on your computer, follow these instructions:

A. To Delete your DOCUMENT History for Windows XP:

  1. Right Click on the Start menu, and selectProperties (Make sure the Start Menu Tab is selected)
  2. Click on Customize (select the Advanced tab) and click on Clear List.

Be sure to also erase the Document History on applications like Microsoft Word and Excel. These applications save a history of the most recent documents opened at the bottom of the File menu.

  • To erase, click on the Tools menu, and then Options, & select the General tab of the dialog box.
  • Un-check the Recently used file list check box, then click OK to close the window.
B. To Delete your Web browser History using Microsoft Internet Explorer:
  1. Click on the Tools menu, and then select Internet Options. A dialog box will come up.
  2. Make sure the General tab is selected at the top & click the Delete button in the Browsing History area.
  3. You can choose the specific items you want to delete or you can select Delete all.
  4. Click Yes when the confirmation box comes up and then click OK to close the Internet Options Window.
C. To Delete your Web browser History using Netscape Navigator:
  1. Click on the Edit menu, then click onPreferences. A dialog box will come up.
  2. Click the Clear History button, then click the Clear Location Bar button.
  3. In the Category: panel on the left side of the dialog box, click the little next to Advanced. Click on Cache.
  4. In the Cache panel on the right, click theClear Disk Cache button. Click OK on the confirmation box.
  5. On older versions of Netscape Navigator (version 3 and below):
  6. Click on theOptions menu, then click on Network Preferences &select the Cache tab in the dialog box.
  7. In the Cache panel on the right, click the Clear Disk Cache button, then Click OK on the confirmation box.

D.  To Delete your Web browser History using AOL:

  1. Click on the Members menu, then click on Preferences.
  2. Click on the WWW icon, Select Advanced and then Purge Cache.

When you delete the browser and document history completely, it may create suspicion from a computer-savvy batterer. To avoid this, simply reload the history list by going to some standard Websites such as www.google.com.

If the perpetrator or abuser can access your computer, they can find out which Web sites you have visited, as well as the documents you’ve viewed and emails you have sent. They may even install a program that secretly monitors and records everything that is done on the computer. The safest way to seek help from online resources is to avoid using a computer the batterer has access to (i.e. home, relative’s house) and use a computer at work, at the library, or an internet café.
If possible try to use applications on Web browsers that don't store data on the computer you are using. These are also very convenient if you are using someone else's computer, and safer than storing information on your home computer. Here are some examples:
